The Wii has more power than you think

The important word for Wii's graphical capabilities is TEV (Texture Environment Unit). Don't forget that. When developers talk about making a game for Wii they never ever mention the TEV unit in the Wii. They only say it can't do some of the things the original Xbox could do, like shaders. They are very wrong though and they need to go back to Gamecube school (or talk to Factor 5's Juilan Eggebrecht) to find out that even the Gamecube could do everything the Xbox1 could do, only with a different method. The Xbox1 worked similar to a PC, so if developers made a game for it they would make it like a PC game. They couldn't do that with the Gamecube since developing a game on Gamecube was completely different. Custom shaders, custom lighting, custom textures - custom everything. Xbox and PC follow a code that most developers know and its not all custom. They have programmable shaders, like Shader Model 2.0 for instance.

The Gamecube has the TEV and that allowed for games like Starfox Adventures and Rouge Squadron 2/3 to have texture compression, Light sourcing and advanced shading for graphics that were considered amazing for the time they were released. Go back and play Star Fox Adventures again and tell me that it doesn't still look awesome, and it was released 5 years ago.

The same applies to the Wii. Developers don't want to have to make a game from the ground up for the Wii when they can just port over PS2 games with PS2 graphics and add Wii controls to make a quick buck. When they release a game on all systems they don't use the 360 version because they can't do it without re-writing the entire game all over again for Wii to make it look similar. It's just too much work for those lazy devs. Using a PS2 engine for a game is a lot more easy since the Wii can do that in its sleep.

The Wii does not have Shader Model 3.0 and it doesn't have the power to run it, but it can produce custom shaders with the TEV that look almost exactly the same but have no name other than "custom". You can see this in Super Mario Galaxy. Basically all you can do is look at the game and ask yourself if it looks as good as high level shaders in other games, I'm sure the answers will vary. Mario Galaxy definitely has the best shaders yet in a Wii game and many people from various sites have said that the game looks so good that its on par with many Xbox360 games.

The Wii has S3 texture compression for incredibly detailed textures on walls and surfaces. Only 2 games on Gamecube used this technique and they were Geist and Timesplitters 2. No games on the Wii use this yet, but they are coming.

The Wii also is capable of the Next-Gen Motion-Blur that is so nice in games like Gears of War and Lost Planet. It remains to be seen how much of this effect we will see in Wii games if it is being used with other effects turned on.

We don't really know the Wii polygon pushing power, but we do know that it has to be more than Gamecube. Remember that the Gamecube was no slouch with polygons, Rouge Squadron 3: Rebel Strike accomplished 20 million fully textured, light sourced and shaded polygons at 60 frames per second in the famous "Escape from Hoth" level. Many people think Resident Evil 4 was Gamecube's limit in power, but I think it really was Rebel Strike.

Here is a quote from an IGN interview with Factor 5's CEO Julian Eggebrecht on the Wii's power and developers being sloppy:

IGN: Resident Evil 4 was a beautiful GCN title. Rogue Squadron was doing things at launch that developers still haven't done on Wii. Why do you think that is? Are studios getting sloppy on Wii?

Julian: Yes. I'm so disappointed knowing exactly what the Wii can do -- and I still think nobody knows it better than we (no pun intended) [laughs]. I really have to say, boy, am I disappointed! They all have finally figured out, five years into the hardware's life cycle, how to do at least basic shaders and a rim light, but that's what everybody does. But I still don't see enough bump and normal-mapping, if any. I still don't see enough post effects, although you would have insane fill-rates with Wii. I don't see any of that. I was digging out Rebel Strike the other day and was looking at it, and we had some people who were visiting ask, "Why isn't anybody else doing this on Wii?" And I am at a loss. I really am.

So basically the Wii can look very similar to the Xbox360 in terms of graphics in low-res 480p when a game is made by a developer that actually makes the game knowing the Wii's strengths. You can't go into making a game on the Wii thinking that its a PC or an Xbox, because if you do you won't be able to make games look as good as you want. The developer willl come away thinking that the Wii just isn't capable of doing things like Shaders, Normal Mapping, Motion-Blur, detailed textures and Bloom lighting-when it absolutely can. I'm not saying the Wii will look exactly the same as 360 in the future, but I am saying that we haven't seen what the Wii can go graphically by a long shot. The system is capable of every Next Gen effect out there, maybe it can't do all at once but it can do them all to a lesser degree at least.

Look for Super Mario Galaxy to fully expose all these developers when it actually does all things graphically that Third Parties have said the Wii cannot do. Its too bad we only have 1 true game to prove this(Metroid Prime 3 is close) but I'm sure we'll see more in the future. Factor 5 needs to show them all how its done and Capcom needs to bite the bullet and release Resident Evil 5 on the Wii.

*Speculation* Command & Conquer 3 coming to Wii?

"Our 1UP spies used our patented brand of trickery to get a hold of the mysterious teaser image pictured above, which has been circulating in the e-mails of Electronic Arts employees involved with the recently released
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.

So what does it all mean? The only thing we know for sure is that some C&C3-related announcement will be hitting EA's
official site for the game on August 7th. The image is also appearing on the site now. The news could be anything from a new expansion or game announcement to a patch release to -- hell, maybe it's just a website redesign. Whatever's going down, we'll be there to catch it in a couple of weeks."

An interview with EA a couple of months ago revealed that they were interested in the idea of bringing C&C3 to the Wii. This announcement that C&C3 will revolutionized on August 7th this year only seems to add more fuel to that fire. In my opinion, the only real way to revolutionize C&C would be to bring it to the Wii. Porting the game to the PS3 or adding an expansion pack would be far from a revolution and EA knows full well that the Wii has been a revolution both in code name and in actually changing the way we play games. If the announcement is anything other than a Wii version, I will be very disappointed in EA to say the least.

*Speculation* Wii secret revealed in September?

Late last year before the launch of the Wii, Reggie and Perrin Kaplan both made statements that another secret would be revealed about the Wii right before the release. The launch came and went and all fronts were silent. Now it seems Reggie is back saying the same thing again, this time in an interview with Gamehead. Reggie said that a "good" surprise was going to be announced for the Wii in September.

So this is where the speculation begins. The surprise shouldn't be anything we already know is coming (the new download channel and the Mii popularity contest), but it could be many other things. I've listed some of these below:

1: Matt from IGN said in a podcast before E3 that we should expect a resurrection of an old franchise to be revealed at E3. This never happened. However, Matt then said that it should be announced very very soon. So it could be a new game announcement (Kid Icarus, Punch Out!!). If Nintendo does this, it would truly show how irrelevant the new E3 has turned out to be.

2: Nintendo announces that they are licensing Unreal Engine 3 from Epic Games. While I don't see this happening, it would show that the Wii can actually run this engine like the other systems and maybe developers would bring games that they thought could only run on Xbox360 over to Wii; given the proper development tools of course.

3: Nintendo announces HD 720p firmware upgrade along with DVD playback for the Wii. We've known about the DVD playback for almost a year now, but the HD firmware upgrade could really be a possibility. A recent interview with Shigeru Miyamoto showed that he almost let something slip about HD in connection with the Wii when asked if this was coming in the future.

4: Nintendo announces their version of an online headset for Wii. There have been many patents released by Nintendo over the past year and a half and one of them was for a headset. This is a possibility since online gaming is really going to take off for the Wii this year and a headset would be needed for better interaction.

Special thanks to Falafelkid for shedding light on this

What do you think it could be?

*UPDATE* It appears that Reggie was only referring to a surprise in the Wiiconnect24 or some new downloadable content towards the end of September.

Here's hoping for Goldeneye!

Nintendo dominates NPD sales for June '07

Hardware sales:

DS - 562,000 units
Wii - 381,800 units
PS2 - 270,000 units
PSP - 230,100 units
Xbox 360’s - 198,400 units
GBA - 113,000 units
PS3 - 98,500 units

Top 10 software:

1. Mario Party 8 - Wii (Nintendo) - 426,200 units
2. Wii Play - Wii (Nintendo) - 293,200 units
3. Pokemon Diamond - DS (Nintendo) - 288,400 units
4. Pokemon Pearl - DS (Nintendo) - 214,700 units
5. Forza Motorsport 2 - Xbox 360 (Microsoft) - 197,400 units
6. Guitar Hero II- PS2 (Activision) - 197,350 units
7. Guitar Hero II - Xbox 360 (Activision) - 177,600 units
8. Pokemon Battle Revolution -Wii (Nintendo) - 157,900 units
9. Resident Evil 4 - Wii (Capcom)
10. The Darkness - Xbox 360 (Take Two)

Link

Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition sold almost 15o,000 copies in 10 days outselling "The Darkness" on Xbox 360. "The Darkness" is a game that cost millions and millions of dollars in development time, only to be outsold by RE4 for the Wii which was made by Capcom for next to nothing. The only money spent was on Wii controls and putting in the Ada missions, I can't imagine this being expensive in the least. This should be a red flag to Capcom and any other developer who wants to actually make money from game sales. If a Third Party makes a quality game from the ground up for the Wii, it will sell. Seeing that Resident Evil 4 is a port and it still sold great should be another hint to developers to get on the Wii wagon and make some quality software. Just how good could Third Party sales be if they put more resources and time into their games for the Wii?

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 to feature 6 online modes

Link

1. Custom battle: with a customized character
2. Normal Battle: with regular characters
3. Friend Battle: against a friend
4. Ranking Battle: battle to be the best in the world!
5. Ranking: world and national classifications
6. Shop: the shop.

I would have been happy with just straight up 1 vs. 1 fighting, but this sounds very in-depth. If the controls work as well as some are saying, this could be the best DBZ game yet.

New Super Mario Galaxy scans

Some new and some old pictures. Who is the woman that Mario is looking at? The scan appears to say that her name is Rosetta, her purpose is not yet certian. I can't wait to find out, this game is looking fantastic. Game of the year material?

E3 2007: New Super Mario Galaxy screens

Now this game looks amazing. Talk about making other developers look bad (Dave Mirra BMX) Mario Galaxy keeps reminding us that the Wii really is a Ferrari under the hood. I hope the rumors are true about Factor 5 developing a game on the Wii also, I'm sure they are sick of the crap we are all seeing graphically on the Wii from Third Parties. November can't come soon enough!

E3 2007: New Metroid Prime 3 screens

It does look at step up from previous games. I'm sure gameplay trailers are soon to follow.

*Speculation* Resident Evil 5 and more RE Remakes coming to the Wii?

"According to an interview with Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles producer, Masachika Kawata, with AMN affiliate site Jeux-France, and kindly translated by NeoGAF member Dascu, there is a possibility that we will be seeing more Resident Evil remakes on Wii. From the sound of things, Kawata has expressed interest in remaking one of (or, all of) the first three titles for Wii; using the Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition style gameplay (and, assumedly, engine). Also confirmed was that Umbrella Chronicles will not feature online co-op.

When questioned why Resident Evil 5 was not currently in development for Wii, Kawata revealed that RE:UC and RE4: Wii Edition will be tests to gauge how well the series can perform on Wii.

In addition, Kawata and his team working on Umbrella Chronicles are still looking into how they can exploit the Wii remote functionalities and/or Nunchuck for the title. He states that it will be more than just a simple on-rails light-gun game. And, as we already know, Umbrella Chronicles is said to tie up loose ends in the Resident Evil storyline. Regarding which titles will be featured in Umbrella Chronicles, only the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil 3 were mentioned; no word on if Resident Evil 2 will also make an appearance. Additionally, there are no current plans for any Resident Evil titles for the PSP. However, Masachika Kawata and other veteran staff members would like to continue the Dino Crisis series; unfortunately, nothing is planned at the moment.

Finally, the interview with Kawata revealed that more information regarding Resident Evil 5 will be shown soon. Ladies and gentlemen, start your speculation. We’ll have more on all of the above when it’s available."

This is an interesting article because usually when a developer is asked if they are bringing one of their Next-Gen projects to Wii, they say no because the Wii is either not powerful enough or not for their audience. Kawata did not say any of that, but said that RE4 and UC will be the test to see if the series can sell on the Wii. RE4 is off to a great start so far, I don't see why Resident Evil 5 should not come to the Wii if those games sell well. Capcom can easily use a modifed RE4 engine for the game and make it look similar to the Xbox 36o/PS3 versions; it won't look as good but if you can imagine RE4 with better textures, more polygons and better lighting then I'm sure Resident Evil 5 could look great on the Wii.

As far as remaking RE1-3 with RE4 gameplay, I'm excited; but I would rather play RE2 and RE3 remade than RE1 since we all have played that game a ton in the past 11 years. More as it breaks.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 to have online play? *UPDATE* Now confirmed!

Link

If you click on the bottom picture and look closely you will see "Nintendo Wi-Fi" as being apart of the Wii version for this game. This is a strong possibility that some form of online play will be in the game. If it is leader boards or straight up 1 vs. 1 battles remains to be seen. Nothing is confirmed so take it as a rumor.

UPDATE: DBZ BT3 is now confirmed from IGN via Atari to have competitive online play for the Wii version only. That is awesome news for me since I really enjoyed DBZ BT2 and wanted more when I was finished with the game.

G4 TV overrated and annoying?

Yes thats right, I went ahead and said it. Recently G4 posted some videos clips of Morgan Webb and Adam Sessler talking about what they expect to see at E3 next week. Adam said that we should expect to see a lot games for all systems to be revealed, blah blah Halo3 blah blah Lair blah blah Mario. Morgan Webb said basically the same thing, sounding rehearsed even. News? Hardly. What kind of audience watches G4? Why are the hosts stating the obvious and why do we care about what the hell they say?

If any of you actually watch G4 for the gaming news, you either A: Don't have the internet or B: too lazy to go on the internet to find the most recent gaming news or C: You think Morgan Webb is hot and can't believe she likes to play video games so you watch. (Jessica Chobot from IGN looks better in my opinion)

What annoys me about G4 is the way they talk to the listener and the way the entire game industry is portrayed. The Wii is currently at almost 9 million systems sold worldwide and is out pacing Xbox 360 and PS3 in sales by a large margin. You'd never know any of this if you watch G4 since these systems are portrayed as either being better than Wii (they would never say it, but it is implied) or when a game is released of all systems, they say for Wii and the Next Gen systems. The Wii is actually the ONLY Next Generation system out there. Xbox 360 and PS3 are from the Nintendo 64 Generation with better graphics. Playstation 3 has some motion controls put in but poorly implemented and cannot really be considered as any kind of leap in play control.

As for Morgan Webb and Adam Sessler, why should anyone care what they say if you have the internet in your home? Morgan Webb doesn't know a damn thing that anyone else who comes here or goes to Gonintendo or IGN doesn't know. The truth of the matter is that G4 exists for the money. They found out that they can make a lot money from basically regurgitating everything on the internet and giving cute girls a job to attract more viewers. Don't let what they say fool you, G4 doesn't decide console races and they don't decide sales. I remember when they were comparing PS2, Gamecube and Xbox versions of Need for Speed back in the day. The Gamecube version was a poorly done port of the PS2 version (of course) and the G4 hosts said that it was the system not being powerful enough to make the game look as good as the PS2 version, NOT that the developers dropped the ball. That is the kind of stuff that has been going on for years on G4, its not new. Spike TV is pretty bad as well but they don't cover games as much as G4.

G4 announced that they will be covering E3 live this year. Will Nintendo be brushed aside for Microsoft and Sony coverage? I would like for once that Nintendo be given their due on these TV programs (internet sites are doing this now) since the Wii is such a smashing success. However, how much does G4 really matter in the grand scheme of things? How many people really care about G4 in the first place?

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Special Assist Trophy Samurai Goro

"What’s an Assist Trophy?!

Well, these are characters who appear to aid the fighter that called them forth. Basically, they’re guest characters separate from Smash’s playable roster!

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is sort of like a festival that all sorts of characters show up for. Bear in mind, though, that you can’t control any of the characters appearing on these pages. Let there be no mistake about that.

In any case, you won’t know who is in an Assist Trophy until you use it."
