Nintendo NX Tech Demo needs "Cutting Edge Chips" to run on PC

**Updated at bottom of post with additional source**

I have more news from Takashi Mochizuki the man who posted the Wall Street Journal article about the NX Dev Kits being shipped out to Third Parties and the console having quote "Industry Leading Chips",  I have emailed him directly for more details on the tech of the console and what exactly he heard from developers who have seen the console dev kits in action.

Here is the email chain (some info has been left out for privacy purposes):

Hello David,

The quick answer is "I don't know." Sorry!

-Several people who said who have seen a demo said what they saw is impossible to run on a computer without a "industry-leading" or "cutting-edge" chips. Cutting-edge in what way, they refused to elaborate.
-And an important thing to remember, probably you know well already, is that chip specs won't be finalized until much closer date to the release.

hope this helps, and plz ask me follow-up questions if you have.

thanks,

mochi

Subject: NX "Industry Leading Chips" term
Hello Takashi, I am a fellow gaming enthusiast from a popular gaming forum and a gaming website.

For some reason, there is debate on what you meant in regards to your statement that the Nintendo NX will have "Industry Leading Chips" ?

This does in fact mean that the NX will be using more advanced technology and be able to produce better performance/graphics than the Playstation 4 correct?

A simple, "yes" or "no" is all I need :)

Thank you!

There was a random post on a Nintendo forum eariler today basically claiming the same thing as Mr Mochizuki said he heard from developers. While he actually does not know the exact specs and how they would compare to Playstation 4 as my question was referring, what he says makes sense for the case in favor of the NX to be more powerful than the PS4 and possible by a decent margin.

Keep in mind that he reminded me that the chips are not finalized yet, but what is being shown to developers is really impressive in this initial stage of development.

Also, as you can see above his email address is posted right here, so if anyone wants to confirm this information as true, just email him and I'm sure he will confirm the information. He seems to be a very nice individual.

**Update**

I would like to give credit to the site Administrator at Nintendo Forums who goes by the name "Crunchyg" he posted a story yesterday that basically matches and confirms what Mr Mochizuki posted in the Wall Street Journal, it is too close to be a lucky guess or fabrication. Nintendoforums and Crunchyg was accused of being "fake hype" reporters due to the lack of notoriety of his site but he has sources in the industry that are basically on the same level as Mochizuki from the WSJ. Obviously nobody's going to say too much since they are under an NDA, and Nintendo's PR is unfortunately already aware of the thread at his website.

Out of good faith and respect for a fellow Nintendo fan and someone who is not in this for profit (no ads on his site), here is a link to his original post from yesterday that has been confirmed to be based on the same information that Takashi Mochizuki also received:

Nintendo Forums: Nintendo NX will have "incredibly powerful" hardware

  1. Its highly likely that the NX will produce better graphics, better frame-rate and better speed than the PS4 purely because it's a younger console by two years and will have more higher spec chips in it (technology is cheaper) - that's a given - An example that Nintendo will do this is the WiiU which had 4 times more RAM than a PS3 and it produced nicer graphics (Check out MarioKart 8, SuperMario Bros U etc) - WiiU was the most powerful console on the planet until PS4 arrived.

    1. It's not dead, its killing everything in its way.
You are quite obviously a delusional brain -dead moron

    2. Dude it's obvious that Nintendo Nx is gonna outperform CONSOLES that are almost 3 years old and were already outdated at the time of their release and still to this day are extremely underpowered as nearly every single game runs like absolute poop with framerate between 20 to 60 FPS with a good marjority of aaa games running at 30FPS or less with drops and so yea TRUST ME WHEN I TELL YOU THE NX HAS 2.87 TFLOPS OF COMPUTE POWER WHICH IS BASICALLY 30% more powerful than ps4 that's the truth as I have insider into with regards to the dev kits and regardless if you wanna believe me or not JUST USE YOUR MIND OK NINTENDO ISNT GONNA SCREW UP AND RELEASE ANOTHER UNDERPOWERED CONSOLE ON PAR OR BELOW CURRENT CONSOLES WHICH ARE ABSOLUTE SHIT

    3. THAT NINTENDO DIDNT LEARN THEIR MISTAKE WITH WII U BEING UNDERPOWERED OK ONLY A FOOL WOULD IMAGINE THE NX BEING WEAKER THAN 3 YEAR OLD PS4 XBOX ONE THAT WERE ALREADY OUTDATED N UNDERPOWERED WHEN THEY LAUNCHED

  3. People only need to look up AMD's own Carrizo APU tech to see that AMD have parts easily capable of outperforming PS4's level of hardware, on a lower level of power consumption.

Carrizo packs 4X3.4Ghz Excavator CPU cores, plus an 800MHz 819GFlop GCN core that runs on 35 watts, strapping the tech for 2 of those together would net a GPU inbetween PS4 and XB1 in performance, with a CPU that far outpaces both of the rival consoles, running on 70 watts.
12 Excavator CPUs and 24GCN cores, with a 2.457TFlop GPU is achievable at 105 watts.

No reason why Nintendo can't have a machine that plays games like Battlefront at 1080p 60FPS locked, with better physics and visual effects.
HBM or faster GDDR5 is also available.

It all just depends on what price and form factor Nintendo wants to go for, but they can definitely have a machine with 8 faster CPU cores and a GPU that sits between PS4 and XB1, with a box 2/3rds the size of PS4 if they want.
That level of tech, launching at $299 in Fall 2016 is definitely possible, a higher end machine with 12 CPU Cores and a 2.4TFlop GPU for $349 is doable at the end of 2016.

Quite frankly this is what Nintendo needs to get them back in the game.
The tech would make developers happy, Nintendo could easily emulate Wii U games, 3DS on the home console.

  4. Nvidia shield was a powerful handheld aiming to take on the most powerful tablets but original or popular franchises were lacking. If NX wants to grow fans like the wii days and regain gamers loyalty like SNES days it needs to get every huge publisher onboard and bring out big titles every month.... not like now 2 or 3 a year ! !!

  5. They can have the best hardware in the world, but there is no point unless they can get their software house in order. That meant having a pipeline of franchise titles easy to go AND getting third party developers on board for THEIR flagship games.

  6. Maybe Nintendo finally understood they need to move away from 'for kids only' and rather invest on an expensive console that will make gamers say 'okk, IT IS a bit expensive, but it's really powerful, and games will look fantastic'.

I already own a ps4. I would only buy the next Nintendo system IF it was at least 2 or 3 times more powerful.
Otherwise, if the system will only match the ps4 power, 4 years after the ps4 release... forget me.

Also, 'a fast PC is needed'. Yeah.. but a PC from 2011 ?

  7. @Stevo

They were referring to the demo running on current PC's and them needing basically the newest chips (CPU/GPU) to run it.

  8. at 16nm 14nm with custom design and low latency and a big catch they could easy hit 35 watts plus like the wiiu and still outperform the other two

its not about overal numbers itsvabout thruput real world performance even if less gflops it can still out perform them ps4s cpu is a joke and the ram high latency

NX could be very high bandwidth and very low latency anda bigbfast catch memory a good balanced design this alone will help if carrizo is 35 watts

imagine 35 watts at 16 or 14 nm with custom design and they might nt use current or standard cpus and it doesnt need 8 cores

it needs to be fast balanced and free of bottlenecks, a 4 core zen or 4 core k12 would easy outperform ps4

i want morebthan anything else HUGE BANDWIDTH and ow latency and lots of catch and everytrick in the book for efficent and compression systems

highest power at lowest power draw and small form factor, AMDs apu experience can deliver this now

by simply having huge bandwidth large catch good meory balance it could be 1080 to 4k capable

  9. Ill just stick to a PC that crushes all of the consoles.

  10. LOL, I love PC gaming, but gotta have that Nintendo console for the best of both worlds.

  11. The problem is that the console you're talking about is not NX. If Nintendo releases another 300$ console, with the competence very settled is going to fail even faster than Wii U. So, it was stated that the console price tag is going to be (for god's sake) 100-150$, and it should be, otherwise Nintendo won't have a single chance to sell "just well" against the other two.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The price is Nintendo's problem to figure out, they very well could go aggressive and take a loss and make up the profits on software and Amiibo. I support them going for an aggressive approach, Miyamoto said earlier this year that Nintendo is no longer going after the casual market since they are fickle and are smartphones anyway, what market is left then? The gamer market.

Nintendo 64 was the most powerful system on the market in 1996 and cost Nintendo a lot of money to make, if it wasn't for the cartridge decision they made, that console would have truly leapfrogged the Playstation 1. Developers simply won't port games to a console that is not based on modern or in this case "cutting edge" tech. Nintendo is doing what they need to do and after the death of Iwata, you can bet that they have a lot to prove.
